Media Training Workshops

There are numerous opportunities to generate press coverage on the local level. It becomes harder as one goes up "the feeding chain."

It is on the local level that trained volunteers can make a significant difference in the amount of news coverage that is generated on your organization or issue. If your organization cannot afford a full-time public relations staff person, then training either for staff or volunteers might be the solution.

The full day media training workshops are designed to teach basic skills such as:

  • Understanding what is news
  • How to write a press release
  • The importance of timing
  • Why developing professional relationships with reporters is key
  • How to pitch feature stories
  • How to arrange editorial board meetings
  • How to place op-eds
  • The importance of attitude
  • Interview techniques

A unique aspect of our workshops is our Media: Friend or Foe Exercise. This group exercise helps participants to learn what holds them back from working with reporters and what they can do about it.

Consistently rated a ten on our workshop evaluation form is our local media panel session. We contact local reporters from print media, radio and television stations and ask them to participate in a one-hour question and answer session. This gives participants a chance to see the world from a reporter's perspective and learn what they need.

The workshops are designed to be engaging learning experiences. Testimonials from individuals who have attended my workshops will be found on this site. Call 315-476-3396 for more information.
