Kiss and Make Up:

Washington Post 10/26/99

The Heritage Foundation is still trying to lift the putative Iron Curtain separating political conservatives and media.

To that end, the tank this year created a new internal Media Center and is busy buffing its already aggressive communications program. Part of the center's efforts involve in-house training, and former L.A. Times and Arizona Republic journalist James Hill is overseeing programs on writing, public speaking, media skills and public affairs. The tank also hired Mark Tapscott, a veteran of the Journal Newspapers and the Washington Times to do more media outreach.

"We're still conservative, most journalists are still liberal, and the bias is awful" Heritage President Edward ? writes in the fall issue of Heritage Today. But, "If we want to sell (the media) more of (our) products, we have to appeal to their needs and interests as journalists, and forgo the luxury of complaining about their personal beliefs."
